Apple Plans to Launch Smartwatches with Cameras in 2027
Washington, 24 Mar (ONA) —- Apple is planning to develop new versions of its smartwatch with built-in cameras, expected to be released by 2027.
According to Bloomberg, Apple intends to integrate an in-display camera into one of its future watch models, while the camera in the more expensive Apple Watch Ultra may be located on the right side near the Digital Crown button.
The cameras are not expected to support FaceTime video calling, but will instead be dedicated to the Visual Intelligence feature, which allows users to quickly obtain information about places and objects around them, like pointing the watch at a restaurant to get its reviews or hours of operation while passing by.
This feature first appeared on all iPhone 16 models in 2024 and is also available on the iPhone 15 Pro starting with the iOS 18.4 update.
The report also indicated that Apple plans to add small cameras to future AirPods, which will enhance the artificial intelligence capabilities of its wearable devices.
On the other hand, Bloomberg revealed that Apple abandoned the idea of releasing an Apple Watch SE in a plastic design, as the design team was dissatisfied with the watch's appearance, while the operations team found it difficult to reduce the cost of manufacturing its case compared to the aluminum version.
The company had considered this option to make the watch more attractive to parents looking to purchase a smartwatch for their children, but production challenges appear to have forced it to abandon the project.
