Violent Storm Batters Istanbul, Halting Transport and Toppling Trees
Istanbul, 8 Jan 2026 (ONA) --- A ferocious storm engulfed Istanbul today, delivering one of the city's most severe weather events in recent memory. The powerful system brought violent winds, torrential rains, and a dramatic temperature drop, severely disrupting life across the metropolis.
Meteorological officials reported wind speeds surpassing 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph), ranking at 11 on the Beaufort scale—a classification for a violent storm just below hurricane strength. Authorities warned that conditions would continue to deteriorate, marking a sharp reversal from earlier spring-like temperatures to harsh winter weather.

According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), the intense downpours and storm conditions intensified citywide. Temperatures, which had reached 17-18°C (63-64°F) earlier in the week, were forecast to plummet by approximately 10 degrees by evening.
In response to the dangerous conditions, all ferry services in Istanbul were suspended. The powerful winds caused significant damage, uprooting trees in multiple districts, damaging vehicles, and snarling traffic. A notable incident in Bakırköy saw a fallen tree crush four parked cars along the coastal road, leading to the temporary closure of Yeşilköy-bound lanes. Emergency crews worked for hours with chainsaws to clear the debris before reopening the route.
Avalanche risk was reported in high-altitude areas of eastern Black Sea inland regions and northern and eastern eastern Anatolia due to heavy snow cover.
Officials urged residents to remain cautious against transportation disruptions, roof damage, falling objects, flooding, lightning, carbon monoxide poisoning and avalanche hazards, and to follow official warnings closely.
